PRACTICE CYCLING SAFETY BE A SAFE CYCLIST |
Always wear a helmet and be sure your children also wear helmets.
Change positions correctly -- slower traffic stays right, so on the left. Say "on your left" to warn the cyclists ahead as you pass.
Be aware of the cyclists around you.
Be predictable. Ride straight ahead at a constant speed unless you indicate a change of direction.
Yield to pedestrians, no matter who has the right of way.
Do not block pedestrian crosswalks.
Ride with traffic -- not against it.
Do not wear headphones!
Be in control of your bike. Always have at least one hand on your handlebars.
Do not hang onto moving vehicles.
Announce hazards when riding in a group. Riders behind do not have a good view of the road surface ahead, so it is important to announce potholes, gravel, grates, etc. Point to the hazard and shout, "hole," "bump," etc.
Move all the way to the side of the road if you must stop, whether for mechanical problems or just to regroup.
Be careful! Metal plates and cobblestones in the road get slippery when wet and can cause a fall.
Always use hand signals.
